The lyrics are an invitation to women to take center stage in their own lives - to be strong and confident enough to make their own decisions. The following song was used in the film "How Green Was My Valley", which won an Oscar for Best Picture in 1941. It was written by Charles Laughton, who also stars in the film. The lyrics are sympathetic to the Welsh people in their struggle against private property and their eventual triumph over oppression. The refrain was sung by Catherine Lacey Jones in English, but the Welsh language version is intended to replicate Charles Laughton's voice with all its quirks and idiosyncrasies. It has been suggested that the lyrics are based on an incident which took place in Newport, Rhode Island in 1849. The song was written by Stephen Foster in 1850 - one year after his death.
